“Noticing” the World

Person looking at a starry sky

The war in Ukraine goes all the way into me … noticing the tragedy and human suffering hurts my soul. The aggression, destruction of homes and neighborhoods, murder of innocent people, and displacement of millions hurt my heart. It makes me sick with grief for the losses the Ukrainian people are bearing and for all of us collectively. And, I also feel deep compassion for the Russian soldiers being forced to commit this atrocity and the Russian people for the horror that their leader is inflicting.

I feel disturbed and upset by our world.

Our Skill: “Noticing Others” helps me. When I notice the whole of the world I see the tragedy, but I also see the miracle. I see good people standing up for what is right and going beyond measure to help. I see the miracle of nations making agreements and setting boundaries against aggression. I see people everywhere, including Russians, standing up against what is wrong.

I feel inspired and hopeful by the miracle of what’s possible.

I find that my own resilience requires a “both/and” mindset. I can see both good and bad when I am Noticing a more complete story of what is happening. Being human includes feeling pain and love — both of which arise to guide my actions.

How does having a “both/and” worldview strengthen your resilience?
