Last week I found myself in a rut. I was grumpy, snippy, and NOT my most resilient self. Seriously, ask my husband. He would agree. I know I am better when I take care of my body with exercise, healthy foods, and sleep. But last week something was missing.
So, I forced myself to check in to see what it was. Was I tending to ALL my needs or just my physical ones?
When was the last time I:
- Connected with friends
- Blasted music and danced
- Played games
- Dressed up
- Took a break from social media
Through pausing and taking stock of how I was treating myself, it became apparent that I was not playing enough. Being playful brings me joy, and one of the core concepts that differentiates the Centering Skill: Nurturing Myself from how most people think about “self-care” is the importance of incorporating joy.
I have challenged myself for the month of February to choose one joyful activity to engage in a day (hey, it is doable, right? It is the shortest month!). Today, I blew out my hair, put on makeup, wore a favorite outfit, and took an extra-long walk while chatting with my best friend. Tomorrow….who knows? Maybe it will be time to blast some music.
How will you find joy today?
